After the surge in online demand during the coronavirus pandemic, Hotel Chocolat will create 200 jobs in its chocolate manufacturing plants and distribution locations.
The chocolatier said that during the lock-in period, customers shopping online can help mitigate the impact of closing store assets.
Hotel Chocolat said that as shoppers bought Easter and Mother’s Day gifts online, digital sales increased by more than 200% year-on-year in the quarter ended June 30.
From March 22 to June 15, the retailer closed all its stores in the UK for a period of 12 weeks. The Prime Minister allowed non-essential retailers to reopen.
Due to the adaptation of Covid’s safety health and safety guidelines, its factory in Cambridgeshire was also temporarily closed for eight weeks until May.
Hotel Chocolat said that 119 of the 125 stores in the UK are currently open, and the sales performance of its high street sites is stronger than that of the city’s “city center”.
Although total store sales are low compared to the same period last year, the number growth is “still very strong” and group sales since the end of June “are in line with management’s expectations.”
The company said that in the six months ending June 28, total sales fell by 14% to 45 million pounds, which was affected by store closures.
Co-founder and CEO Angus Thirlwell said: “During the pandemic, I was very impressed by the cultural, professional and ethical response of our team.
“The acceleration of changes in the retail landscape has prompted us to speed up plans and investments in opportunities we have already pursued.
“Online, our brand will now grow at a faster rate, offering gifts, subscriptions and family indulgences.
“Part of the reason is that Covid has accelerated change, but the introduction of new concepts and digital enhancements also support growth.”
